Bolton Abbey is one of Yorkshire's most breathtaking estates, encompassing 30,000 acres of moorland, woodland, and riverside scenery in the Yorkshire Dales. At its heart stand the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Bolton Priory, an Augustinian monastery founded in 1154 and partly destroyed during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries. The nave of the Priory Church has remained in continuous use as a place of worship for 900 years. The estate is criss-crossed with 80 miles of walking trails, including the famous Strid, a narrow gorge where the River Wharfe rushes through ancient limestone rocks. The famous Stepping Stones offer a fun — and occasionally soggy — crossing of the Wharfe. From bluebell woods in spring to golden moorland in autumn, Bolton Abbey is a truly year-round destination for walkers, history enthusiasts, and families alike.

Historic Augustinian Priory

Founded in 1154 as an Augustinian priory, the church was partially dissolved during the 1539 Reformation. While the choir and transepts remain as spectacular ruins, the original nave was preserved and continues to serve as the active Priory Church of St Mary and St Cuthbert. The estate is a vast and sacred landscapes, offering both ruins for exploration and a sanctuary for living worship.
