A beautiful seven-mile heritage line that follows the course of the River Dart from Totnes to Buckfastleigh. Originally a GWR branch line built in 1872 to transport wool and coal, it now offers a peaceful and scenic journey through the Devon countryside.

Railway History

The Primrose Line

The South Devon Railway (SDR) is the longest established steam railway in the South West. It occupies a part of the former Ashburton branch line, which was once nicknamed the 'Primrose Line' due to the spring wildflowers that bloom along its banks. The journey is uniquely scenic, with the track hugging the curves of the River Dart between the historic market town of Totnes and the monastic town of Buckfastleigh.
