A charming narrow-gauge line that runs for 4.5 miles along the scenic southern shore of Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) in Snowdonia. It follows a section of the former Great Western standard-gauge route and is powered by a collection of historic steam locomotives from the Penrhyn and Dinorwic slate quarries.
Lakeside Slate Heritage
The Bala Lake Railway occupies the roadbed of the former Ruabon to Barmouth main line. When that line closed in 1965, enthusiasts rebuilt it as a narrow-gauge railway. It has since become a sanctuary for the historic Hunslet steam engines that once worked in the great North Wales slate quarries. The journey offers serene views of Bala Lake and the surrounding Berwyn Mountains.
